Pulling together serene accents, wood, linens and a nod to nature.

Muted interiors and natural accents are the most prevalent trends in children’s interiors for 2017 . My two boys are 6 and 3, and will be sharing a bedroom for a few years to come, so I wanted to create a scheme that will grow with them, and will be playful as well as relaxing and calm as the majority of their time in the room will be at bedtime as we have a small playroom for toys and chaos elsewhere in the house.

NoFred playmat

Colour inspiration and a little something for the floor- this playmat is by NoFred.

The scheme has largely been inspired by the boy’s love of the natural world, and colour inspiration from a Ferm Living fabric Spear print storage bag which we already have at home.

ferm living spear bag

I have sourced muted green linen bedding (a sale find from H+M) and I’ve purchased a textured quilt eiderdown to cosy things up from Camomile London. The beds will be completed with a couple of teal and blue grey cushions by Numero 74 which will add depth of colour.

Muted greens and mixed textures create a cosy bed linen scheme. Eiderdown by Camomile London, bed set from H+M and cushions by Numero74.

I plan to keep the walls very light and neutral in a flat, white matt colour, and add wall art in clusters- I’ve chosen prints from Emily Winfield Martin on Etsy (from the USA so bear in mind you’ll have to pay customs fee when it arrives in the UK) whom I adore, and an animal print by Scandinavian brand Fashionell which you can find at Oskoe Living in the U.K . I’ve treat them to another beautiful embroidery from Aro for Kids which are beautifully handmade in Spain. Our white ash string shelves will be hung so that the boys can display their treasures.

Velveteen Babies blog

Some of the prints and wall art I’ve collected for the walls in the boys room. I plan to use a wood hanger rather than a black frame to hang the ‘In the Forest’ print.

I don’t want the whole scheme to reflect just one colour, so prints, wall art and bunting are an easy way to create a broader, more flexible pallete across the room. By keeping furniture light wood, and floor covering neutral, it should be a flexible space that can be regularly updated for them both for years to come.

In the world of babies and nursery styling, there is one extremely popular creature that pops up in all shapes and forms. The bunny.

Little Blue Nest

Creating some of the Little Blue Nest magic

Finding classic, muted and beautiful bunnies take a bit more work. A few months ago I discovered a brand on Instagram called Little Blue Nest. I clicked on their page and was instantly drawn to the colours and illustrations which hark back to an Enid Blyton age, and reminded me of one of my favourite childhood books- The Animals of Farthing Wood.

Created by Ila, the brand launched in late 2016. Ila set out to create an elegant and timeless nursery brand, and each each item is created from pure and organic cotton threads.

Another heirloom nursery purchase has to be this ceramic rabbit light £70 by White Rabbit England. They are handmade in the U.K and are a classic, something to love for years to come. It would look perfect on a wooden shelf, stacked on vintage books, or with a Velveteen Babies garland and a botanical print in any nursery.

White Rabbit England lamp

Beautiful bunny room inspiration with lamp from White Rabbit England.

Back to the Little Blue Nest collection, which covers both beautiful design, with the softest muslin. My daughter, Willa likes to sleep holding a muslin, and ever since I made my first purchase, our bunny swaddle blanket has been much commented on when we’ve had it out and about.

Little Blue Nest Baby on the Velveteen Babies blog

Sleeping soundly in her Little Blue Nest Baby collection.

Luckily for us, the range has increased since our first parcel, and the Little Blue Nest Baby range now comprises of soft muslin cot sheets, quilts, muslins and the original swaddle blankets in this bunny design, but also in a carefully and lovingly created collection of a number of illustrations. We took delivery of the softest cot sheet the other day, and it’s truly lovely.

Little Blue Nest Baby

Fawn toy by Maileg at Coco&Wolf and Numero74 cot bumper from Molly Meg.

Our sheet is teamed with a soft muslin Numero74 cot bumper and I’ve introduced wood and natural design influences to Willa’s space- a natural sheepskin rug on the floor and plenty of greenery in raffia baskets really works to create a calm and serene sleeping arrangement. Our sweet Maileg fawn toy is sourced from Coco&Wolf.

Velveteen Babies Bunny

Best bunny finds for a natural inspired nursery.

I’ve not got any artwork up, as we are moving house next week, but I think vintage inspired bunny prints by Boo&Bell would look sweet hung on a wood poster hanger around a nursery, or this Etsy find is this gorgeous print by Howell Illustration, which is so simple and subtle.

Velveteen Babies blog Scamp and Dude
We’ve all been hanging out in Scamp and Dude this week. It was a hit with my two boys, Felix (6) and Barnaby (3) who are the best critics of any brand- and it got a massive thumbs up!

Conceived in 2016 by Jo Tuchener-Sharp, the brand has an inspiring story and concept. In October 2015, Jo suffered a brain haemorrhage which meant that she had to spend lengthy time in hospital away from her children. It was down to this that inspired Jo to create a brand that would make children feel secure when apart from their loved ones, and scamp and Dude was born.

Velveteen Babies blog Scamp and Dude

A Superhero has my back

There’s a real emphasis on quality, and fun which appeals so much to my kids, and they immediately pounced on the Superhero Sleep Buddies which now go to bed with them every night. They have a little pocket in them so that your child can pop in a photo of their family or carers, so they feel safe and loved.  The most lovely thing about these is that Scamp and Dude donate one to a child in need with the purchase of one. Scamp and Dude works with charities Grief Encounter, Don’t forget the Kids and the leading London children’s hospital.

Scamp and Dude are taking Mama accessories to the next level too- the swag bags are the perfect sizes for make-up and cosmetics, and the larger size is ideal for skincare and holiday essentials (can also double up as a clutch) or fill with toys for when you’re out and about.
The sweatshirts are super soft and true to size- I haven’t taken my leopard one off and it’s one of those easy styles that’s perfect for the school or nursery run.

Velveteen Babies looks at Tobias and The Bear bedding

We’ve got our mitts on a beautiful Tobias and the Bear bedset from Hip Little People, and it’s amazing! The softest cotton jersey, which is ideal for Barney as he suffers from eczema and has really sensitive skin.

Tobias and the Bear
To show how wonderfully versatile it is, we’ve put together a few different looks incorporating it on our bunk bed. I’m often asked where the boy’s bed is from, and it’s just simple old Ikea  Mydal at a bargain price which we’ve painted grey.

Ikea Mydal bunk bedWe were on a budget when we put the boys room together 2 years ago, and although I’d really like the Linus bunk bed from Made.com , the Ikea one has done us proud and has survived two small boys exceptionally well!

The storm cloud style naturally lends itself to the very dominant monochrome superhero children’s room theme which is so prevalent at the moment, and we created a look with a nod to that, but kept it fairly clean, though pops of colour could be introduced easily.

Superhero theme room Ikea Mydal bunk bed

To create this look we used our Velveteen Babies Superhero garland, a crescent moon nightlight from Lights4Fun, toy storage box by OohNoo and a touch of silver with our crescent moon cushion from Marjorie Minnie. Mixing natural wood, with softer greys and silvers keeps the look fairly soft instead of harsh monochrome which we’ve moved on from.

We used our My Red Hand Gang superhero hanger suspended on a wooded peg which we screwed into the bed frame, and hung a Roxy Marj pennant from it. Sadly, Roxy no longer makes these, but you can find lovely pennants from Inky Huckster and she’ll personalise with your own message.

Dinosaur themed kids room

Dinosaur kids room
My children adore dinosaurs, but they are not always the most interior design friendly theme to source! Luckily I discovered the most brilliant prints from Dinoraw Kids. They are incredible and there’s a huge range on their website, and cushions too. They are based in Australia but ship worldwide, and they also have a couple of European stockists.

I don’t like a strong room ‘theme’ so we’ve kept the look very natural, lots of raffia baskets for the toys, and a leafy green plant. I’d personally avoid trying to find a dinosaur bedding set as there’s nothing worse than overkill on a subject matter which is an easy mistake to make.

Our desk is by Plyconic and has a metal grid noticeboard from This Modern Life. We’ve clipped another Dinoraw print onto it (many come ready framed so they are ready to go!).

Rainbow theme kids room

One of our big favourites with everyone is a gender neutral rainbow look. I hate too much clutter so we have just added accents of bright colour. Our cloud neon light is from V and C designs, and rainbow garland from our webshop Velveteen Babies.

Toys can be stored in wire baskets and the ecelectic mix of colours simply lends itself to the theme- try wire storage baskets from Ferm Living to get the look. Keep bright accents looking their best against white and grey to balance it out. We have a Born n Monday playmat on the floor in the style of a rain cloud.

Our final look is ‘a nod to nature’. My kids all adore finding out about the world, conservation and nature. It’s another completely genderless installation. Again we’ve used pieces from the other styles, the Ooh Noo toy trunk for our books which is incredibly useful.

Our ‘world’ rug is by OYOY from Scandiborn and our whale toys by Talpathings on Etsy. Monochrome toy storage is at its best and most useful in our Ferm Living fabric storage bags, and we’ve added more plywood accent to the wall with our toy wood clock from Muotokuja which was one of my weekly finds over on my Velveteen Babies Instagram page (@velveteen_babies ). Each week I like to share a small kids design business that I love, so if you search the hashtag #velveteenbabiesloves on Instagram you’ll discover some real interior treasures.

Bedding used throughout is from Hip Little People (there’s a few other gorgeous styles from the Tobias and the Bear collection and cot bed sizes too) as well as design led clothing and homewares on their site.

Velveteen Babies presents a bright new shared bedroom

Our house sale fell through, so we decided to move the boys shared bedroom to the back of our house, to a light bright third floor room. It’s westerly facing and gets so much sunshine, meaning they get a bigger, lighter bedroom for all their treasures.

Barney (3)  and Felix (6) are happy sharing a room, and both enjoy the companionship. Now that we have a little girl, Willa (7 months) we wanted to give her a space of her own and I’ve now created a space for her in the boys old room. Our house is still on the market, but I felt it was important that they all had lovely rooms so they feel secure and happy at home.

Velveteenbabies kidsroom design

I was keen to use many of the beautiful interior accessories we had already amassed so brought our beautiful world rug back out (from scandiborn.co.uk) which is a brilliant neutral backdrop for pops of colour.

Velveteen Babies
I’ve recently discovered a real gem of an online shop, called The Little Baby Company.  On it I found the perfect cushion for the boys- a grey mountain by Fabelab, which is organic cotton and so soft. I’ve also been coveting one of the double sided happy/sad pillow cases  for the boys bunk bed which I also found there. Their bed is just a simple wooden bed from Ikea, which we have painted in Farrow and Ball Lamp Room Grey. It was black previously, but I wanted to achieve a lighter, softer look. Felix was desperate for somewhere to have his books to read in bed, so I screwed a knob into his bed frame and attached an Olli Ella book basket on, which has a leather loop so is ideal, so no more sleeping with heavy books in his bed! The cloud light by A Lovely Little Company makes the perfect reading companion and has a switch so that he can read for a little bit longer after Barney has fallen asleep.

Velveteen Babies kidsroom

To the bottom bunk, I sourced a grey ‘cross stitch’ world map which comes complete with wooden hanger. I found this online from Urban Outfitters which always has a few home gems to be discovered (the bedding is fantastic from there too). Cosy cushions in monochrome from Ella and the Roo and softies from Lucky Boy Sunday complete the look along with a new grey bedding set by By Graziela.

Kidsroom by velveteenbabies
On the back wall, we have a beautiful kids desk from Plyconic. These kids desks can be fitted together in minutes and are incredibly tactile and sturdy. So that the boys can display keepsakes and their artwork, I have placed a Block Design white metal grid above it which I found at This Modern Life. It’s incredibly versatile and lots of fun.

Velveteen Babies blog
It can be a struggle to find innovative and fun storage for the home, looking in conventional places. We have approximately 500000 children’s books (it’s an addiction) so finding homes for them is tricky. Our Ooh Noo storage box on wheels (find them at scandiborn.co.uk) has made a brilliant home for quite a few of the boy’s book collection, and if we were staying in our house I’d find space on a wall to do the Ikea Ribba book shelves again, but I’m loathe to drill more holes in the walls in case we sell in the next few weeks.

Velveteen Babies blog

The boys room is the perfect backdrop for some of our awesome Djeco toys. Our car track took minutes to make, can be stored away in seconds and is a massive success with the boys.

Barney is a huge fan of his pull along train, which is a lovely gift idea, and we found it at The Little Baby Company, who has a large selection of Djeco. They are actually interesting to kids unlinke many stylish wood toys, and are robust enough to be played with on repeat!

Felix and Barney are my reliable product enthusiasts and they definitely get a massive thumbs up from them. Made from 100% super soft cotton and designed in the UK, they are kind on the small ones skin and feel luxe.

Felix’s favourite is the super colourful and fun Junk Food Deluxe set which has enough bright rainbowy goodness and tongue in cheek humourous illustration to satisfy every kid. We styled it up with monochrome and pops of colour.

I’ve bribed my smallest boy to help me show our monochrome collection off- luckily he was decked in one of his Beau Loves outfits which was ideal! (We can’t wait for the new collection).

The Superhero garland was one of my very first products, two years ago. Back then it was really tricky to find monochrome kids room accessories so I decided to make my own.. which turned into this business.

velveteen babies
Making a kids space that brings joy to children and adults alike can be tricky, but by keeping walls and flooring clean and neutral you can add pops of colour and fun accessories.

velveteen babies
Our Ferm living tent is well loved and a few years old now, but the kids still enjoy playing in it. We’ve adorned ours with our monochrome droplet garland, and added a Mini Willa poster and Superhero garland to break up our grey walls.

We’ve added pops of bright yellow which works so well with grey and monochrome with a Mama Designs blanket and a yellow lightning bolt light from Ivy Cabin.

Velveteen Babies Liberty garland

Our new cloud garland in Liberty Poppy and daisy print hung on grey ribbon with gold blanket stitch

Liberty prints are heavily influencing the world of children’s clothing and interiors, so

I wanted to bring you my round up of all the Liberty print finds in kids design. Classic Liberty print is reaching all facets of children’s interiors and clothing and I can see no sign of this trend abating. Mixing Liberty print with other natural materials such as linen and pure wool is ideal for creating a classic, timeless children’s comfort space.

The Tipi

Liberty Emma and Georgina print eiderdown. From The Tipi £47. 65×95 cm and backed with cotton percale

I have found beautiful bedding from Coco and Wolf and also a high street buy from La Redoute. Both look best teamed with different textures and layers, rather than ‘matchy matchy’. Coco and Wolf with Little B have some beautiful swan cushions and pillowcases so if you just wanted to update existing bedding with a few touches of print, then this would work really well. Also notable from Coco and Wolf with little B are the changing mat covers In a choice of fabrics.

Other innovative ways to bring a touch of print to your nursery or children’s interior are the lovely name wire signs from Little Cloud. These pretty name signs would look adorable hung above a bed head or on a shelf. I’m going to treat the baby to one nearer the time. Also from Little Cloud are the lovely moon wall hangings, they would look perfect in a child’s room with one of our Liberty collection garlands, it’s perfect to mix and match prints as long as the base colours are soft and neutral.

Little Cloud also have a great range of cushions, hair clips and crowns by the amazing Fable Heart and delivery is free within the U.K.

I’ve also fallen in love with many small businesses producing the most lovely Liberty print baby clothing.

My most recent find is Olivier Baby who have a sweet selection of rompers, bloomers, dresses and tops in a choice of prints and linens with accessories such as ribbed tights and knitted bonnets to complement the range. They have a flash sale on some of the range so take a peek!

Another favourite is Coco and Wolf

We love the little bloomers and tie top summer suits, perfect for older babies with plenty of leg rolls!

Bonnets are also crucial to Bebe styling too. I’ve already bought a smal stash from Briar Handmade (from Mama Owl in the U.K)  and they come in a wide range of colours, prints and sizes to suit all little heads.

Also noteworthy are the sweet bonnets and appliqué baby vests and T-shirts from Magnificent Stanley. This UK small business is run by Becky who handcrafts each item from her studio in Lewes, East Sussex.

Finally, for a seriously budget friendly take on Liberty print, head to Uniqlo where they have a limited edition Liberty X Uniqlo collection. Girls dresses are from £9.90 and double baby vest sets just £7.90. There are styles for both sexes and also a women’s collection.

I wanted to make night feeds as easy as possible with our baby number three when she arrives, because I won’t have the luxury of lazy pajama mornings this time, the school run simply won’t run itself come September sadly.

With this in mind, I decided to forgoe the usual Moses basket purchase and treat myself to a beautiful Snüzpod. I’d read up on reviews and weighed it up against the Chicco Next to Me which is marginally cheaper, but in my opinion the Snüz came up top. I also wanted something that I could fit my other indulgence in, a ‘Sleepyhead‘ which I ordered from John Lewis.

Velveteen Babies

Our Snüzpod and our baby girl colour scheme.

I’ve personally chosen muted pastels with grey and cream highlights for our own arrival.

To fit our grey and blush theme, I have added cushions from The Velvet Egg and Fine Little Day. These compliment my blanket stash from Mama Designs (grey) and the beautiful swan playmat/quilt by Cam Cam Copenhagen which I purchased from The Tipi. It’s backed with softest fine corduroy and is so lovely.

velveteen Babies
Also from The Tipi is this beautiful woven basket bag, which I will use to store nappies and wipes in our bedroom. I’ve added a little donkey rattle from Roxy Marj (they come as a pack of two, one blush, one black) and I’ll eventually tie them onto the Snüzpod.

Essential Muslins come in the prettiest muted nudes and pinks again from Cam Cam Copenhagen from Mama Owl (they also do lovely greys and mints).

Our sweet wooden pram and dollies are by Pinch Toys which we usually have displayed on our String shelves at home.

I eventually plan to introduce touches of Liberty print and I’m secretly working on some new garlands using pops of Liberty print for Velveteen Babies.

The garland in the pictures will be going to it’s new home this week, it was a custom order for someone else.

velveteen babies
Whilst my theme is quite feminine, I also wanted to style our Snüzpod in some different ways so that you can get some styling ideas and inspiration, if you are expecting and don’t know the sex then the following ideas are completely gender neutral.

velveteen babies
To bring something bright and beautiful, this theme relies on white and grey as a base colour for a nursery. It’s crucial to tone down bright colour pops so it doesn’t become too intense or messy.

Our rainbow garland becomes a crucial backdrop to tie in grey clouds and a bright splash of colour.

We’ve used bright bedding from Mama Designs and a mono cloud cushion from Farg Form at This Modern Life.

Our star light is from Gingerrock Designs on Etsy and rainbow suitcase from retrokids.com.

Add a fun nightlight such as this one by Heico from decobaby.co.uk  and our fun little Velveteen Babies stormcloud is lovely to hang from a doorknob or a hook on the wall.

velveteen babies
Velveteen Babies Stormcloud
Finally, for the purists and lovers of monochrome, I’ve put together a genderless scheme that is easy to achieve.

You could add pops of colour or a highlight colour (mint would work well) to this scheme.

velveteen babies
We love the big swaddle Muslins from Modern Burlap at This Modern Life, and have used ours as a sheet (though they have just introduced fitted sheets to their range).

The knitted blanket is by Farg Form, again from This Modern Life and the little milk bottle rattle by The Milk Collective at The Modern Nursery.

Our beautiful cloud blanket is by the talented Born n Monday.

White milk bottle garland is our design and available in our Etsy shop.

Life with kids, it’s busy, and frantic and there’s nothing worse than tackling toy mountain at the end of a busy day. Quite frankly, tackling a pile of  Duplo is an uphill struggle.

This week our prayers were answered with an arrival from Playpouch UK.

These fabulous cotton playbags blend style with practicality. Easy enough for my two year old to undo and open, and refill and close, tidy up time suddenly became much more bearable.

Playpouch is visually friendly enough to have displayed around the house and is roomy enough to store a serious amount of toy clutter. We chose the scandi style monochrome crosses and there are plenty of other options too to suit every home.

Playpouch has been brought to the UK from Australia by a forward thinking family who understand the trauma of keeping control of clutter, and making storage look stylish. The mantra is ‘Maximum Play, minimum mess’. This site pretty perfectly with our life as a busy family.

Playpouch is made from strong cotton canvas and is sturdy enough to hold heavier toys too, though it’s also ideal as an innovative way of storing the dreaded Lego collection. Our kids love the zipped pouch at the front for treasures, or Lego instruction books.
