Warsaw, velveteen babies, Velveteen Babies nursery, Willa's nursery 01/05/2017

Over the last few weeks I’ve been putting together a special space for my 7 month old daughter, Willa. My brief was to create a magical nursery space that would also have many aspects that could grow up with her, rather than a typical ‘nursery’ scheme which would date and become obsolete. My only bugbear is the flooring- an inherited beige carpet that we can’t do much about at the moment!

Velveteen Babies nursery
I particularly wanted to introduce greys and soft blush pink to the scheme, and accents of white, silver and black. For now the walls are painted simple white emulsion, but if we stay in our current house for longer then I have plans to paint the walls a muted pale blush pink. Instead of a wall colour for now, I’ve used Mrs Mighetto circus prints which I sourced from Cissywears and Home and Me which I had framed in painted dark grey wood and stick on silver glitter stars from Little Cloud Kids.

Velveteen Babies
Willa’s Room has sloping ceilings and beams which are painted white, so I strung up Numero74 grey velvet bunting from Scandiminis and I treat Willa (myself) to a grey feather Vita Eos light shade because I knew it would be perfect.

Velveteen Babies
Fortunately the ceilings are still fairly high so that we were able to hang up her grey Numero 74 canopy (also from Scandiminis) on a cup hook inserted into a plug in the ceiling and I strung battery lights from lights4fun inside which are on fine metal thread.

Velveteen Babies nursery
I wanted to find something for the back wall behind Willa’s cot to team up with her sparkly star wall stickers, and I found the perfect white crescent moon light from Lights4fun. It’s ideal as it’s so simple, and can be switched on and off on the side and easily mounted on the wall. I love the simplicity of it- it was just what I wanted for that area of the wall and it’s so dreamy at night.
Lights4fun
Next to Willa’s cot stands a beautiful solid wire basket with lid, sourced from The Modern Nursery, and I’ve used it as a stand for Willa’s Miffy light which has a dimmer switch so creates a lovely soft light in her nursery by night. Other lovely lighting comes from Ginger Rock Designs and is a sparkly blush raindrop that sits on her bookshelves alongside magical bird toys from Ilka Design.

We are really lucky to have an original Victorian fireplace in Willa’s room and it makes for a beautiful focal point. It’s the ideal place to store some of her treasures which I’ve carefully displayed. Her plywood name is by Lala Loves Decor and her wooden circus tent by UP! Warsaw from Emi and Nell (UK stockist) which is a nice match with her Miss Mighetto circus collection framed posters.

Gorgeous Babasac from Mamadesigns in pink hearts- hung on her personalised hanger by Sophia Victoria Joy.

Willa’s simple cot is just from Ikea, as I’d rather buy her a beautiful bed when she’s old enough, rather than spending a fortune on matchy matchy nursery furniture.

Willa’s rag rug pulls together all the pastel shades and is by Bloomingville interiors. I found it via the Scandinavian Design Centre. The toy cot next to the fireplace is from This Modern Life which is full of Willa’s toy friends. In the fireplace are Willa’s gorgeous pink letter blocks by Too Many PJ’s  (you can order any letter combinations to spell out any phrase or name).

Swan print by Pax and Hart from The Little Baby Company, Louis Ghost chair by Kartell, and luggy toy basket from Olli Ella at This Modern Life. Willa’s crochet name is from Little Cloud Kids and her quilted swan coverlet is by Cam Cam Copenhagen. It’s the perfect dusty pink shade.

Just acorn

Willa has the most beautiful lamb toys from Just Acorn which are immaculately handmade.  They are divine and Barbara from Just Acorn makes just a few different creatures each week to sell. It’s worth following her on Instagram at instagram.com/just_acorn for updates on her magical creations. I don’t think it’ll be long until I’m buying a friend for Mrs Lamb and her sleepy baby!

Just acorn

Beautiful house dolls cot by Jones and Parker toys.

Velveteen Babies

Of course, Willa had to have her own Velveteen Babies garland, so I created this style with her room in mind. Silvery stars and a shiny moon are perfect next to her canopy and aren’t overbearing when there’s so much going on in her scheme. I also bought a beautiful silver moon cushion from Marjorie Minnie and a grey velvet Numero 74 star cushion to sit in her cot to coordinate the scheme. Further cushions from The Velvet Egg tie in with the circus references.

Velveteen Babies

The final flourish will be the addition of this Aro for kids embroidery, which I’ve ordered. I can’t wait for it to arrive!

When I first created Velveteen Babies, I began following a magical blog, full of the nicest kids-design discoveries, brands and shops that I immediately had to go and browse. This blog was called Bobby Rabbit and it was full of little treasures (including a post on Velveteen Babies!)

Nikki of Bobby Rabbit has, for the last year, turned her passion for all things kids-design  into an appealing and stylish online shop full of many of the beautiful and unique things that Nikki had been discovering along the way.

We are big fans of the Bobby Rabbit shop and have been pulling together a gift guide below with some of our favourite treasures, many of which we are lucky to have in our own home.

playforever

One of Bobby Rabbit’s bestselling brands are the incredible Playforever cars. These art toys are one of my personal favorites and we have some squirreled away for my Son’s birthday which is coming up. The quality, workmanship and size makes them something to play with, but also to treasure forever. They also make a perfect gift for any vehicle loving child (or grown-up!). They are designed in the U.K and of the most exceptional quality.

Here’s our edit of all things bright and beautiful :

Nikki takes such care in sourcing her stock, and one of the lovely little items she sells is the sleepy bunny. They are available in a soft pink or in grey and are £22. They are extra special because they are lovingly created in Turkey by a community of mothers- women who live in the outskirts of Istanbul and who, in many cases have no other means of making an income for their families. These bunnies are made from the softest organic yarn which is GOTS certified and they are suitable from birth.

Too Many PJs
Lovingly created by Erin in London, UK, Too Many Pjs is a gem of a small business with an array of modern handcrafted patchwork products in their Etsy shop.

Erin’s background is textile design and she’s worked freelance for the likes of Roland Mouret, Joseph and Alexander McQueen so she knows a thing or two!

After the birth of her first child, Erin made a playmat using some of the fabrics she had designed and Too Many PJs was born after so many of her friends started asking for their own version.

Too many Pjs Velveteen Babies
Erin believes wholeheartedly in making sure her products are of the finest quality whilst marrying a contemporary design concept, and textures and colours that will appeal to the whole family.

The mix of print, texture and colour is perfect for stimulating and delighting babies, so the patchwork playmates are a fantastic alternative to the garish ones from the high street.

too many pjs velveteen babies
Erin also handprints canvas and creates minimalist styled cushions and play blocks which are created in her studio. The play blocks are created with lowercase letters and have sides of textured material which are ideal for little ones and the cushions are sold in patchwork style or as a clean minimal design shown above.

Velveteen Babies Liberty garland

Our new cloud garland in Liberty Poppy and daisy print hung on grey ribbon with gold blanket stitch

Liberty prints are heavily influencing the world of children’s clothing and interiors, so

I wanted to bring you my round up of all the Liberty print finds in kids design. Classic Liberty print is reaching all facets of children’s interiors and clothing and I can see no sign of this trend abating. Mixing Liberty print with other natural materials such as linen and pure wool is ideal for creating a classic, timeless children’s comfort space.

The Tipi

Liberty Emma and Georgina print eiderdown. From The Tipi £47. 65×95 cm and backed with cotton percale

I have found beautiful bedding from Coco and Wolf and also a high street buy from La Redoute. Both look best teamed with different textures and layers, rather than ‘matchy matchy’. Coco and Wolf with Little B have some beautiful swan cushions and pillowcases so if you just wanted to update existing bedding with a few touches of print, then this would work really well. Also notable from Coco and Wolf with little B are the changing mat covers In a choice of fabrics.

Other innovative ways to bring a touch of print to your nursery or children’s interior are the lovely name wire signs from Little Cloud. These pretty name signs would look adorable hung above a bed head or on a shelf. I’m going to treat the baby to one nearer the time. Also from Little Cloud are the lovely moon wall hangings, they would look perfect in a child’s room with one of our Liberty collection garlands, it’s perfect to mix and match prints as long as the base colours are soft and neutral.

Little Cloud also have a great range of cushions, hair clips and crowns by the amazing Fable Heart and delivery is free within the U.K.

Velveteen Babies Betsy Cloud garland. The raffia bag is from The Tipi and all moccasins throughout are by Wolfie and Willow.

I’ve also fallen in love with many small businesses producing the most lovely Liberty print baby clothing.

My most recent find is Olivier Baby who have a sweet selection of rompers, bloomers, dresses and tops in a choice of prints and linens with accessories such as ribbed tights and knitted bonnets to complement the range. They have a flash sale on some of the range so take a peek!

Another favourite is Coco and Wolf

with a huge range of beautifully made children’s clothing encapsulating the very best of the Liberty print range.

We love the little bloomers and tie top summer suits, perfect for older babies with plenty of leg rolls!

Bonnets are also crucial to Bebe styling too. I’ve already bought a smal stash from Briar Handmade (from Mama Owl in the U.K)  and they come in a wide range of colours, prints and sizes to suit all little heads.

Also noteworthy are the sweet bonnets and appliqué baby vests and T-shirts from Magnificent Stanley. This UK small business is run by Becky who handcrafts each item from her studio in Lewes, East Sussex.

Finally, for a seriously budget friendly take on Liberty print, head to Uniqlo where they have a limited edition Liberty X Uniqlo collection. Girls dresses are from £9.90 and double baby vest sets just £7.90. There are styles for both sexes and also a women’s collection.

I wanted to make night feeds as easy as possible with our baby number three when she arrives, because I won’t have the luxury of lazy pajama mornings this time, the school run simply won’t run itself come September sadly.

With this in mind, I decided to forgoe the usual Moses basket purchase and treat myself to a beautiful Snüzpod. I’d read up on reviews and weighed it up against the Chicco Next to Me which is marginally cheaper, but in my opinion the Snüz came up top. I also wanted something that I could fit my other indulgence in, a ‘Sleepyhead‘ which I ordered from John Lewis.

Velveteen Babies

Our Snüzpod and our baby girl colour scheme.

I’ve personally chosen muted pastels with grey and cream highlights for our own arrival.

To fit our grey and blush theme, I have added cushions from The Velvet Egg and Fine Little Day. These compliment my blanket stash from Mama Designs (grey) and the beautiful swan playmat/quilt by Cam Cam Copenhagen which I purchased from The Tipi. It’s backed with softest fine corduroy and is so lovely.

velveteen Babies
Also from The Tipi is this beautiful woven basket bag, which I will use to store nappies and wipes in our bedroom. I’ve added a little donkey rattle from Roxy Marj (they come as a pack of two, one blush, one black) and I’ll eventually tie them onto the Snüzpod.

Essential Muslins come in the prettiest muted nudes and pinks again from Cam Cam Copenhagen from Mama Owl (they also do lovely greys and mints).

Our sweet wooden pram and dollies are by Pinch Toys which we usually have displayed on our String shelves at home.

I eventually plan to introduce touches of Liberty print and I’m secretly working on some new garlands using pops of Liberty print for Velveteen Babies.

The garland in the pictures will be going to it’s new home this week, it was a custom order for someone else.

velveteen babies
Whilst my theme is quite feminine, I also wanted to style our Snüzpod in some different ways so that you can get some styling ideas and inspiration, if you are expecting and don’t know the sex then the following ideas are completely gender neutral.

velveteen babies
To bring something bright and beautiful, this theme relies on white and grey as a base colour for a nursery. It’s crucial to tone down bright colour pops so it doesn’t become too intense or messy.

Our rainbow garland becomes a crucial backdrop to tie in grey clouds and a bright splash of colour.

We’ve used bright bedding from Mama Designs and a mono cloud cushion from Farg Form at This Modern Life.

Our star light is from Gingerrock Designs on Etsy and rainbow suitcase from retrokids.com.

Add a fun nightlight such as this one by Heico from decobaby.co.uk  and our fun little Velveteen Babies stormcloud is lovely to hang from a doorknob or a hook on the wall.

velveteen babies
Velveteen Babies Stormcloud
Finally, for the purists and lovers of monochrome, I’ve put together a genderless scheme that is easy to achieve.

You could add pops of colour or a highlight colour (mint would work well) to this scheme.

velveteen babies
We love the big swaddle Muslins from Modern Burlap at This Modern Life, and have used ours as a sheet (though they have just introduced fitted sheets to their range).

The knitted blanket is by Farg Form, again from This Modern Life and the little milk bottle rattle by The Milk Collective at The Modern Nursery.

Our beautiful cloud blanket is by the talented Born n Monday.

White milk bottle garland is our design and available in our Etsy shop.

Always a massive theme in summer, icecreams are prevalent in kids interior style in many different guises. I’ve put together this post all about sourcing the very best Icecream play things and interior accessories to swoon over, both kiddo and adult friendly.

Velveteen Babies

we made our own icecream parlour

One rainy Sunday, I created a make believe Icecream parlour for my boys. We just used our simple metal Normann Copenhagen trolley (I found ours via Bodie + Fou shop) and strung it up with our cotton ball lights in pastel colours.

A while back we had visited a pop up cafe where there were some fun wooden icecreams, so I tracked them down. Ours are by Melissa and Doug and proved very popular with the boys. We just googled it and found them for around £20 online.

Melissa and Doug Icecream Set

Our Icecream toy set

I’ve also come across some equally gorgeous Icecream toys that are sure to spark your small people’s imaginations, from foldable paper icecream kits from Moon Picnic at £15 which would be a fun rainy day activity but perhaps for older children who are a bit more careful! These, once made up would be fun to string up in a bundle on some fishing wire in a corner, or add a couple to a stylish shelf display.
Moon Picnic foldable icecreams

Also coveted is the most beautiful wooden set by Nobodinoz at Molly-Meg which at £60 is more of an investment but it is stylish and extremely design led.

Nobodinoz Icecream set

Icecreams are also prevalent in the world of kidsinterior and are fun to mix and match a couple of pieces to add some flair to a kids bedroom, especially when combined with white walls or floor and some pops of colour and texture. The key is not to go overboard, just add a combination of a few Icecream themed products and then dot in other pastel toys and accessories.

Icecream print Bedding

Icecreamy bedding from Bluezoo at Debenhams

We found this pastel Icecream bedding via Debenhams and prices start from a bargainous £22 for a single set. As there’s so much going on with this pattern, I’d suggest you keep walls and flooring light and simple and perhaps add a plain knit/quilted throw in a more luxe material strewn over the bed to tone it down.

Colette Bream

This cheeky chappy is by Colette Bream

I adore this cushion by Colette Bream, it’s firmly on my own personal wish list as its so sweet and not too sickly. Colette has a beautiful Etsy shop full of characters, and selected styles including this one are also available through Scandimini in the UK.

Wanting to update existing bedding or add some pastel flair to your pushchair (and have a conversation starter as people admire your pram blanket) ? Then these knitted blankets by Woouf at This Modern Life at £49 are extremely covetable and come in some varied colour ways.

The perfect prints for any pastel Icecream inspired room are from Wonder and Rah. They blend Icecream sweetness with a dash of Scandi styled monochrome and look great in frames or in wood picture holders (as seen in the background of our Icecream parlour pictures).

La La Loves Decor

Finally, I couldn’t resist adding in this cute print by Milk Moustache Apparel and these sweet baby shoes by Kirsty Doyle. Vests start at £13 and come in this pink colourway or in mint and the little shoes start at £22.

A top tip for an Icecream themed room or a sweet nursery is to use your baby shoes as a shelf ornament. Not only would these shoes look very lovely on, they would also be perfect sat together on a wooden shelf with other wood and pastel accessories and one of our garlands strung nearby. The shelf capture below makes perfect use of our Icecream garland and beautiful prints from Wonder and Rah.

Warsaw, velveteen babies 27/05/2016

I’ve long been a big fan of the beautiful Up! Warsaw products and was so excited to discover a UK stockist recently. Stocked at emiandnell.co.uk its even easier to treat your small people spaces to something so magically crafted.

Up! Warsaw is a small family business that creates ecological, non toxic products for kids rooms. They work only with materials that are appropriate for kids, everything is handmade and they only use non toxic water based colours when painting the detail.

We received the most lovely delivery comprising of a mini TV box in wood finish £32 and the mini circus box in white £32. It was impossible to choose as there are so many lovely colours, mints, whites and wood finishes for a more pared down look, or bright reds and yellows for a rainbow theme.

We love how they display so beautifully with our garlands, and how stylish yet fun the whole collection is, which sits perfectly with our own design aesthetic.

Velveteen Babies

There are no limits to imagination

We styled our Up! Warsaw goodies with some of our Sonny Angel collection (mainly from retrokids.com ) and our Schleich baby animals for a circus theme.

My children were enchanted from opening the box, and my son Felix was so keen to play with them. The quality is just incredible, as a craftsperson myself I was truly impressed by the care and attention to detail. They would make a really beautiful gift for any child.

Coral Atkinson

Circus Circus!

We loved teaming the circus tent with our handmade mini arrow marquee light from Gingerrock designs. I created the little posters resizing images and printing them out which I then blutacked onto the back.

Velveteen Babies
We also loved teaming our Up! Warsaw pieces with these rainbow cases we sourced from retrokids.com which are just perfect as both fun room accessories and also as a plaything.

The beauty of the products is that they are enough to be a style feature on their own, or you can let your kids imagination take hold and use them as both plaything and as a room accessory. They bridge the gap between stylish living and also fun for kids so perfectly.

Up! Warsaw

For the minimalist

For a monochrome scheme we used our mini TV with some ninja peg dolls from Made by Layla  and a globe from Cissywears which shows the versatility, it doesn’t always have to be about loud bright styling when thinking about decorations for a kids room.

Find Up! Warsaw products from £32 at www.emiandnell.co.uk and buy your own magic imaginarium.

Now that I’ve discovered I’m expecting a little girl, I have suddenly become a devotee of the humble but beautiful pastel palette.

I’ve put together a few pastel looks from a few of my favourite children’s /  interior  websites, and some of my own products as they work so perfectly in tandem.

I’ve also been working with Cotton Ball Lights which have so many different and beautiful colour options in their online store.

For the perfect pastel base, use simple white walls, or a pale grey like we have.

Velveteen Babies

Perfect Pastels

In this look, I’ve used a string of cotton ball lights in pastels from cottonballlights.com/uk (used throughout) to tie in lots of pastel hues, so that the look doesn’t get too ‘pink’ ! Pink and grey makes a perfect combination, and I’ve used this beautiful dolls bed from This Modern Life as a sweet accessory.

The monochrome dolls bedding is from Willie and Millie which has a little cover and pillow, the perfect size for the little cot.

The Icecream garland is my pastel Icecream garland available to order in my Etsy shop each Friday.

Filling a paper bag with toys lends a more rustic contemporary look to a children’s room, and I’ve filled it with some of our little toys.

The pink muslin swaddle is by Fine Little Day at This Modern Life again.

This Modern Life

Dolls bed and Cotton Ball Lights

I never planned to get so ‘girlie’ but adding greys and whites keeps this look well away from sickly territory. Personally I’m not a fan of beiges and champagne colours, but wanting a soft look to baby’s area, the greys and pastels are ideal.

Our cotton ball lights are perfect for creating a warm cosy space by night, and a soft light for night time feeds, and by day they are another pretty accessory.

String Shelves

String Shelves, white Ash

I’ve also created a little shelf area using white ash String Shelves from Utility Design which are ideal for displaying our trinkets. I try and keep a balance of whites, greys and pastel touches so it doesn’t become overbearing.

I’ve also started to collect sweet baby accessories and clothes from some of my favourite shops. These pink moccasins are made by Wolfie and Willow and they are the softest chrome free leather.

These little socks are from Archies Boutique and are by Petit Pattes who make the most beautiful baby gift or treat.

I also found this sweet cloud top and matching leggings at The Little White Company which goes so well with our other ‘cloud’ items which are dotted about.

I found this little pink teething ring at Archies Boutique too, perfect as a gift or to stash away in my case!

Finally, I’ve made a new mobile style with sparkling and felt icecreams which will launch in my Etsy shop on May 6th.

I have such a lovely time creating custom mobiles so I thought I’d share some photos of them with you.

This is my classic cloud and droplet mobile, but I’ve customised the little rainbow in order to match my customer’s nursery bedding. It’s very pretty and feminine.

The next mobile is a contemporary look, and has a clean modern approach. It’s based on my mouse garland (which is usually black and white) we’ve softened it by using greys and whites, and I’ve used white cord instead of ribbon to make it as contemporary as possible.

I created a very special custom order in beiges, blush pinks and golds.

I also made the ombrè garland to go with it, and match in the colours. I adore how the colours have worked so well together.
